FIBERAND BASALT FIBERSManufacturing Process
|
The raw material is crushed and melted at a very high temperature, spun into fibers and cleansed in a patented wet process (basalt/diabase fibers only), which not only cleans and removes the shot, but applies the appropriate sizing for the various uses of the fiber. The sizing ensures even disbursement of the fibers into the mix and increases the bonding action between the fibers and other materials. This unique process separates FIBERAND Mineral Fibers from all other fibers on the market.
Fiberand and Laxa Bruks chemists are investigating the interaction between Fiberand Mineral Fibers and several of the sizing agents used by plastic compound manufacturers. Experiments are being conducted to alter the surface chemistry of the fibers to ensure the best adhesion to the sizing and matrix. Several major plastic compound manufacturers are also conducting independent evaluations. The goal is to be able to substitute glass fibers with Fiberand Mineral Fibers. The advantages to this would include substantial savings in raw material costs and increased supply. Moreover, several properties found in mineral fibers, including thermal stability, are not present in glass.
